Assaults against police tolerated nowhere, 60 officers harmed during March 7-8 protests, Interior Minister says
It is not admissible in any part of the civilized world to verbally abuse, attack or commit violent acts against a police officer, said the Georgian Minister of Internal Affairs, Vakhtang Gomelauri, when addressing the Parliament in the interpellation format on Friday.
The Minister stated that during the March 7-8 protest, the public witnessed a number of violent acts, lawlessness, and attacks, resulting in the health damage of 60 police officers.
Gomelauri emphasized that the Ministry of Internal Affairs decided to deploy additional police forces since there was a serious risk of blocking parliament entrances and deliberate physical assault on lawmakers and legislative body personnel leaving the building.
“Police cordons blocked Chichinadze and April 9 streets to protect Parliament exits. Around 9 pm, citizens gathered near the Georgian Parliament building began aggressive actions, verbal insults, and attacks against police officers,” Vakhtang Gomelauri stated.
