Armenia and France sign deal to build Bargushat Tunnel linking Iran–Armenia and Georgia corridors
Armenia and France have signed an agreement on the construction of the Bargushat Tunnel as part of the North–South highway project, which is expected to improve connectivity between the Iran–Armenia and Armenia–Georgia border routes.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said the North–South highway is one of Armenia’s major infrastructure “superprojects,” and described the Bargushat section as one of the most technically challenging parts, requiring advanced engineering expertise.
“France and President Emmanuel Macron support Armenia’s infrastructure development efforts. The project is gradually taking shape, and further steps are planned to bring the full highway into operation,” he noted.
According to Armenian media reports, the project includes both new road construction and upgrades to existing routes. Once completed, it is expected to shorten the distance between Iran and the Georgian border in Armenia from about 550 km to 490 km, improving internal transport efficiency and creating additional transit opportunities, including for cargo movement between Iran and the Black Sea region.
