Anders Fogh Rasmussen – If NATO offered MAP to Georgia in 2008, Russia would not have attacked it
If NATO offered Membership Action Plan (MAP) to Georgia in 2008, Russia would not have attacked the country – Anders Fogh Rasmussen, former Secretary General of NATO told First Channel in an exclusive interview.
According to former chief of NATO, the alliance made a mistake at the 2008 Bucharest Summit. “I supported granting Georgia and Ukraine with MAP but unfortunately, NATO Ambassadors failed to reach a consensus. Thus we made a dangerous signal. We showed Putin and Medvedev that NATO is weak. As a result, they attacked Georgia and occupied Abkhazia and South Ossetia,” Rasmussen said.
The Georgian Radio will offer a full interview with the former chief of NATO in World News Program on Sunday, April 14.
