American toxicologist testified during Saakashvili's trial

Today, Tbilisi City Court heard from the American expert-toxicologist, David Smith, who believes imprisoned Georgian ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili suffers from heavy metal (mercury, arsenic, and barium) poisoning.

In his remark, Smith said that he reviewed number of medical records, lab test results and a 170-page report.

According to David Smith, because mentioned heavy metals are extremely hazardous and are not used for therapy, they could not have entered the body as a result of any medical procedure.

American expert believes that Saakashvili’s exposure to these metals occurred while he was imprisoned because he was already exhibiting symptoms when placed in a medical institution.

He explained that Mikhail Saakashvili needs to be taken to a medical facility that knows how to perform detoxification therapy to remove heavy metals.

Tbilisi City Court holds a hearing on ex-Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili’s jail term delay.

Saakashvili has been in a  jail for more than a year, convicted of abuse of power while in office.
