Ambassador Degnan says Mikheil Saakashvili’s case to be a test for judicial system
US Ambassador to Georgia Kelly Degnan said that the ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili’s case would be a test for Georgia’s judicial system, and the international community would watch it closely to see if the case was handled impartially and following Georgian law and international obligations.
According to the Ambassador, Georgia needs political stability and no more polarization.
“Talking about yesterday is as important as talking about going forward. We want people to be focused on the election, on issues. I think Georgia needs more political stability and not more polarization. There are really important issues that this country needs to deal with, like jobs, high prices, COVID, education, water, roads. We really hope that after these elections, Georgia’s political leaders are going to get back to work on the issues that are the priorities for the Georgian public. Mr Saakashvili’s case will be a test for Georgia’s judicial system, and we will be watching to see if the case is handled impartially and in accordance with Georgian law and international obligations. That’s what we hope to see you,” Ambassador Degnan said.
Law enforcers arrested the ex-president in Tbilisi on October 1 and sent him to Rustavi prison.
