The United Kingdom supports Georgia’s European Union and NATO membership, emphasized Mark Clayton, the Ambassador of the United Kingdom to Georgia, during an interaction with journalists.
“What I would say is, from the very beginning of Georgia’s independence, the UK has been an extremely strong supporter among Georgia’s closest partners and allies in terms of supporting their sovereignty and territorial integrity. Sovereignty is about making choices. And that’s why, despite my own country’s position and the departure from the European Union, that’s why I’m very clear, the United Kingdom supports Georgia’s European Union and NATO membership, right? Every opinion poll I’ve ever seen says that the Georgian people want to be in the European Union and NATO. Every major political party says that its foreign policy goal is EU and NATO membership. And in your Constitution, It says that you want to be a member of the European Union and NATO, right? So that is, as far as I can see, Georgia’s sovereign choice. So, I think going forward then, it is up to Georgia how it interprets that and what it decides. The UK will be with Georgia on that path,” he declared.
