“Georgian Dream is taking its authoritarian crackdown even further,” reads the statement of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE), echoing the hearing going on in the Constitutional Court of Georgia on the lawsuit seeking to ban 5 oppositional parties.

According to the statement, the EU must respond with tougher sanctions against those responsible for the process of banning oppositional parties in Georgia.

Now, major opposition parties face being banned, potentially stripping hundreds of thousands of Georgian voters of their political representation, including our own ALDE member parties. After targeting protesters, civil society and independent media, the Georgian Dream is now going after political opposition itself. The EU must respond with tougher sanctions against those responsible. We stand with the Georgian people fighting for freedom and a European future,” reads the statement.

On October 21, the Plenum of the Constitutional Court of Georgia began a substantive hearing on the lawsuit seeking to declare the activities of five political parties unconstitutional and to ban them. Hearings will continue on 22 and 23 October.
