A 35-km section of the 85-km, four-lane Kakheti Highway covering the route from Tbilisi to Sagarejo in the country’s east has opened on Friday.
According to the government’s press office, the highway fully complies with modern traffic safety standards and is equipped with a lighting system.
The highway bypasses four densely populated villages and towns (Vaziani, Sartichala, Ninotsminda, Sagarejo), thereby relieving traffic in the settlements, halving travel time and tripling the transport capacity.
The construction was financed from the state budget with 533,502,661 million GEL.
The highway is also part of the international transit corridor connecting Georgia with Azerbaijan.
The completed roadway will allow for a one-hour and 20-minute journey from Tbilisi to Telavi.
