Parliamentary majority to support stripping MP immunity to UNM Chairman
The parliamentary majority will support stripping MP immunity to Nika Melia, Chairman of the opposition United National Movement (UNM) Party.
Mamuka Mdinaradze, Chairman of the Georgian Dream faction in the parliament said that the ruling team’s main objective is to ensure supremacy of law and protection of equality principle.
“Nika Melia still has time and chance to take a legally right step, instead of the political and provocative agenda prompted decision,” Mdinaradze claimed.
The majority meeting was held at the central office of the ruling Georgian Dream Party. Representatives of the GD Party discussed ongoing political issues, election reform, culture committee establishment initiative, and setting up interim fact-finding commission.
On February 12, the General Prosecutor’s Office appealed to the Georgian Parliament on use of imprisonment as a measure of restraint for Nika Melia, Chairman of the opposition United National Movement (UNM) Party.
The Prosecutor’s Office said that Nika Melia failed to pay the bail in set terms, and that further increase of the bail amount would not be considered as adequate, logical and proportional measure. Therefore, the only legislative alternative measure under the given circumstance would be imprisonment.
