World Radio Day is celebrated on February 13. The theme for the 13th World Radio Day in 2024 is “Radio: A century of informing, entertaining, and educating.”
“Radio broadcasting in Georgia began in 1925, followed by television broadcasting in 1956. Georgian radio will turn one century old next year. The Georgian Public Broadcaster (GPB) joins the annual World Radio Day with different activities on TV, radio, and digital platforms. New forms, platforms, and technologies appear, and many innovations are still ahead. The GPB’s message for the society for the new season was “To Be Continued,” said GPB Director General Tinatin Berdzenishvili.
The first regular radio broadcasting started in Pittsburgh, US, In November 1921, while in Georgia, it kicked off in May 1925.
World Radio Day, observed annually on February 13, celebrates the powerful medium that has stood the test of time for over a century. The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted this day in 2012 after member states of UNESCO proclaimed it in 2011.
