“Vetoing amendments to the Election Code means that President Salome Zourabichvili protects the sabotage regime,” said Parliament’s First Vice-Speaker Gia Volski.
According to Gia Volski, the set 2/3 quorum in the Central Election Commission (CEC) for decision-making but the balance of political parties and elected individuals on professional backgrounds indicated that the opposition could turn to sabotage and hinder the decision-making on any issue in the CEC.
“Decision-makers should be more than half, not two-thirds because any leverage that allows the radical opposition to sabotage the CEC is a real threat. The Advisors Board has not practically worked and the non-governmental organizations, which staff the board, participate in the CEC activities and can express their views on the decisions. Vetoing the law means that Salome Zourabichvili protects the sabotage regime and wants it to happen,” he said.
Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili, on June 13, vetoed the amendments to the Election Code, which lowered the 2/3 quorum requirement for CEC decisions to the parliamentary majority.
