US House of Representatives sent impeachment articles to the Senate

The US House of Representatives has passed a resolution to submit articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump to the Senate. The corresponding document was signed by the Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

The resolution passed by 228 votes to 193.

The Senate, controlled by Mr Trump’s Republican Party, will decide whether to convict and remove him from office. The impeachment process in the upper chamber will begin next week.

The Senate trial will be only the third of a US president in history.

The House, controlled by opposition Democrats, impeached the president last month.
