UNM's Chiaberashvili says EP to adopt resolution offering support and proposal for Georgian people
“The European Parliament is set to discuss the Georgian issue on October 8th and adopt a resolution on October 9th, which will serve as a clear demonstration of support for the Georgian people and present a distinct proposal,” Zurab Chiabershvili, the Foreign Secretary of the United National Movement party, stated in Brussels, where he attends the European Parliament’s discussion on Georgia.
Chiabershvili emphasized that, fortunately, neither the European Parliament nor EU institutions harbour any doubts that the Georgian people will choose the European path on October 26th.
“If the Georgian Dream party remains in power, regrettably, Georgia will continue to be isolated. Not only will the Georgian people fail to benefit from the EU accession process, but even the advantages we currently enjoy, such as visa-free travel to Europe, may be jeopardized,” Chiabershvili stated.
“Conversely, the European Parliament and EU institutions clearly signal that substantial political, economic, and financial support will be available if the Georgian people choose the European path. Fortunately, neither the European Parliament nor EU institutions doubt that the Georgian people will indeed choose in favour of the European path on October 26th.”
Fourteen members of the European Parliament have prepared a draft resolution on Georgia, which, among other demands, calls for sanctions against Russia, sanctioning Ivanishvili and other individuals, the release of Saakashvili, and the repeal of the law on family values. The draft is titled “On the backsliding of democracy and threats to political pluralism in Georgia.”
