The opposition United National Movement (UNM) launched a signature collection for the release of jailed ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili, said the ex-president’s representative, Sopo Japaridze.
Sopo Japaridze called on Saakashvili’s hundreds of supporters to join the idea, “take a significant step in the country’s new history and choose between dark and light.”
Japaridze stressed that European partners closely observed the developments in Georgian politics and urged the government to end Saakashvili’s “political imprisonment.”
“It is high time for President Salome Zourabichvili to make a historic decision and release Mikheil Saakashvili from political imprisonment, which serves the adversary’s interests, and she knows that,” Japaridze said.
Sopo Japaridze stated that the collected signatures would be submitted to President Zourabichvili on March 1 at 3 p.m.
