UNM calls for annulment of election results, warns of potential sanctions

Tina Bokuchava, Chairperson of the United National Movement, has urged the Georgian government to annul the recent election results and hold re-elections, cautioning that failure to do so may lead to serious consequences from Georgia’s international partners.

“European leaders have already discussed the potential suspension of visa-free travel, linking it directly to how fairly and freely the elections were conducted. Now, the international community openly acknowledges that the principles of fair and free elections were not upheld in the October 26 elections. Our complaint to the Central Election Commission on October 29 further demonstrates that a fundamental constitutional principle—the secrecy of the vote—was breached.

Therefore, if the government fails to annul these election results, where such a core principle was violated, and does not call for re-elections, Georgia’s partners may need to act. This would likely begin with personal sanctions on Ivanishvili and his circle and could also involve considering the suspension of visa-free travel. Ivanishvili, who is intent on holding onto power with support from Russian special services, should recognize the broad call for cancelling the election results and arranging new elections,” Bokuchava asserted.
