Ukrainians continue protesting in Kiev after police recaptures Mikheil Saakashvili

Supporters of Georgia’s former President and ex-governor of Odessa Mikheil Saakashvili are preparing for a large-scale protest to be held on December 10 in Kiev. Ukrainian police recaptured former president of Georgia on Friday, prompting further protests in central Kiev by his supporters who freed him from police custody earlier this week.

Ally and fellow Georgian, Davit Sakvarelidze, who was fired in March from his post as a senior prosecutor for Ukraine, called on Kiev residents to take to the streets to protest Saakashvili’s recapture. “Today Poroshenko broke all records and went down in history as a dictator who does this to political opponents,” he told channel NewsOne near the detention centre in central Kiev on December 8.

Some protesters of Saakashvili are gathered at pre-detention isolator where Saakashvili was transferred last night after detention. Former Georgian leader went on hunger strike. He does not admit guiltiness. Ukrainian General Prosecutor’s Office has to impose imprisonment terms to Saakashvili within 72 hours.

Lawyers were admitted to visit Saakashvili in pre-trial detention cell earlier today. Mikheil Saakashvili does not cooperate with the investigation because he considers that the case is political persecution, – Saakashvili’s lawyer Ruslan Chernautsky reported. As for the health condition of Saakashvili, the lawyer said that after detention, Saakashvili had high blood pressure, though now his condition is stable.

Georgia’s former President and ex-governor of Odessa Mikheil Saakashvili was detained in the apartment of the former chief of Lugansk police. According to “hromadske.ua”, former police chief Yuri Pokinboroda released a video in which he speaks about the detention of former governor of Odessa Mikheil Saakashvili. According to Pokinboroda, he should have been detained together with Saakashvili, but they did not arrest him yesterday.

General Prosecutor Yuriy Lutsenko says Saakashvili is suspected of assisting a criminal organization. On Friday, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said the case against Saakashvili was legitimate and that he should cooperate with investigators. “If he flees from the investigation, this undermines his credibility,” he said. Saakashvili denies the allegations against him. He accuses Poroshenko of corruption and calls for his removal from office.
