Ukrainian Rada prepares draft resolution urging President Zourabichvili to pardon Saakashvili
The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has submitted a draft resolution appealing to Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili and EU member states’ parliaments regarding Georgia’s jailed ex-President Mikheil Saakashvili’s pardon.
The resolution emphasizes that under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, everyone has the right to a standard of living that includes access to basic necessities such as food, clothing, shelter, medical care, and social services required for their health and well-being.
The draft calls on President Zourabichvili and the Parliament of Georgia to support the Verkhovna Rada in obtaining access for the Commissioner of Rights, Dmytro Lubinets, to Ukrainian citizen Mikheil Saakashvili.
It further appeals to President Zourabichvili, taking into account the deteriorating health condition of Saakashvili, to utilize the humanitarian act of pardoning or facilitate the transfer of Saakashvili to Ukraine or another country for medical treatment.
Additionally, the Verkhovna Rada urges the parliaments of EU member states, the United Nations, the European Parliament, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, the Parliamentary Assembly of the OSCE, the Parliamentary Assembly of NATO, BCEK, and the Parliamentary Assembly of GUAM to adopt relevant decisions and resolutions regarding the necessity of pardoning Saakashvili or facilitating his transfer to Ukraine or another country for medical treatment.
87 Rada members initiated the bill.
