Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine’s Ombudsman, has asked the Georgian government for permission to visit imprisoned ex-President Mikheil Saakashvili, who is presently receiving medical care at the Vivamedi Clinic.
“As Ukraine’s Ombudsman, I believe it is vital to ensure that his life is not endangered,” Dmytro Lubinets said on Facebook.
According to the Ukrainian Ombudsman, Saakashvili’s severe health situation is a cause for concern and the Georgian government should provide him with competent medical treatment in an appropriate medical facility or facilitate his transfer to a European or US medical facility.
On December 15, the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement indicating that it is “deeply concerned about the dramatic health deterioration of the citizen of Ukraine Mikheil Saakashvili.”
In light of Saakashvili’s rapidly worsening health, the Georgian court is reviewing whether his sentence should be suspended or deferred.
