US President Donald Trump has vowed to not develop a Las Vegas-style hotel, a skyscraper, in Greenland.
On Monday evening, Trump tweeted a photo of the Greenlandic coastline with a picture of his gold-plated Trump International Hotel cropped into the landscape. “I promise not to do this to Greenland!” Trump wrote in a tweet that accompanied the photo, New York Post reported.
On Sunday, Trump confirmed that he was interested in the US potentially buying the country — which is autonomous, but controlled by Denmark — calling it a “large real estate deal.” “Well Greenland, I don’t know, it got released somehow, it’s just something we talked about,” Trump told reporters outside of his New Jersey golf club Sunday.
“Denmark, essentially, owns it. We’re very good allies with Denmark, we protect Denmark like we protect large portions of the world. And so the concept came up and I said certainly, strategically it’s interesting. And we’d be interested,” he added.
Trump then claimed Greenland was “hurting Denmark very badly,” saying it was costing the European nation around $700 million every year. “So they carry it at a great loss. And strategically for the United States, it would be nice,” Trump said.
