TI Executive Director Eka Gigauri to address U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations
The Executive Director of “Transparency International – Georgia,” Eka Gigauri will address the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations on 12 September as she was invited by the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations to speak at a hearing.
According to the TI’s press office, the hearing will focus on “Anti-NGO Laws and Other Tools of Democratic Repression.” Alongside Eka Gigauri, other witnesses include Douglas Rutzen, President and CEO of the International Center for Not-for-Profit Law, and Yaqiu Wang, Senior China Researcher at Human Rights Watch.
In Georgia, the main aim of passing the “Russian Law” is to silence Georgian NGOs and critical media. Such laws are used against critical groups, a practice that began in Putin’s Russia and has been adopted by autocratic governments in many countries to suppress human rights defenders and the media. These and other issues will be addressed during the hearing on September 12 at the U.S. Senate,” reads the statement.
