Teona Akubardia: Strengthening civil and media sectors key to restore Georgia’s constitutional path

The suspension of the visa-free regime for diplomatic passport holders underscores the support of the Georgian people, who have been striving for over 40 days to safeguard Georgia’s democratic and European future, said Teona Akubardia, a member of the Gakharia For Georgia.

“Today, it is precisely the holders of diplomatic passports and Ivanishvili’s regime that obstruct Georgia’s European path. It is the people, serving as true diplomats with the European Union, who are defending the country’s European aspirations and democracy—not the officials still loyal to the regime, who are working to steer the nation back toward an authoritarian Russian orbit,” Akubardia stated.

She added that Georgia’s European future has been jeopardized, and the constitutional guarantee of its domestic and foreign policy direction is under threat.

“The Ivanishvili regime has stalled Georgia’s European aspirations and undermined the constitutional guarantees of its democratic trajectory. This has led to the suspension of assistance, with funds redirected to support civil society and independent media. This shift reflects increasing backing for the struggle to restore Georgia’s constitutional path,” Akubardia emphasized.

European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, speaking to the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, stated: “We continue to stand, I’m still speaking about Georgia, behind civil society organizations and independent media. 8.5 million Euro have already been reallocated to them. We are also ready to reallocate an additional 7 million Euro to communication activities, and we need to step up response to disinformation spread by the Georgian Dream’s leadership.”
