Taking down EU flag impedes Georgia's European path, insults Georgians' historic choice, Public Defender says
Taking down and burning the EU flag not only impedes Georgia’s European path but also insults the Georgian people’s historic choice, said Levan Ioseliani, newly elected Public Defender on Tuesday.
According to him, any gathering should be peaceful, should not lead to violence, and should not contradict the country’s constitutional principles.
“We must not forget that, according to the Georgian Constitution, all constitutional bodies must take all necessary steps to ensure Georgia’s full integration into the EU and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
Taking down and burning the EU flag is not only an impediment to Georgia’s European path, but it is also an insult to the Georgian people’s historic choice,” Ioseliani declared.
The patrol police raised the flag of the European Union back at the Georgian Parliament building after far-right Alt-Info and Conservative Movement activists took the symbol down and burned it in an incident on Tuesday. Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs initiated administrative proceedings in accordance with the Code of Administrative Offenses.
