Strategy Aghmashenebeli says EU Commissions, Venice Commission, EU leaders speak against Georgia's Transparency Law
“We have heard the arguments from EU leaders, Commissioners, and the Venice Commission calling for immediate repeal of the Transparency law. Isn’t that enough?” said Paata Manjgaladze, the opposition Strategy Aghmashenebeli party member.
Paata Manjgaladze echoed the May 27 statement of Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
According to the Strategy Aghmashenebeli member, it is not relevant what a particular Georgian Dream lawmaker said and how much Bidzina Ivanishvili (GD founder) paid them for their “main argument”.
Paata Manjaladze said he did not know why there were differences in opinions in the EU over the Georgian Transparency law, though.
“We have seen the stance of the Venice Commission, European leaders, I mean France and Germany, European Commissioners, America. As far as I know, no other country apart from Hungary has adopted such a transparency law. The similarity with French law is incorrect. It is largely about intelligence activities,” he said.
“We had an exchange on the developments around the Law on Transparency of Foreign Influence in Georgia. Some member states considered that they were not so important. Others consider rightly so that this law is attempting against the EU norms and values. We have started to consider the most appropriate EU response in case the law is enacted and take decisions at the next FAC in June,” Josep Borrell said on Monday, following the EU Foreign Affairs Council.
