Speaker: Today, in independent Georgia, banking forms basis of economic growth, investment, prosperity
“Banking is not the management of money. Today, in independent Georgia, banking forms the basis of economic growth, investment and prosperity,” said Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili at the event dedicated to Banker’s Day.
The Speaker said that Georgian writer and public figure Ilia Chavchavadze established the Georgian bank, the fact that confirms the significance of banking in the development of the nation, people and the Georgian state.
Shalva Papuashvili remarked that the banking-finance sector serves as the basis of the economy in Georgia and allows entrepreneurs, farmers and students to meet their goals and receive financial aid in coping facing challenges.
“We should consider a healthy banking system as one of the necessary components not only of the economy but also of national security. I would like to stress the role of the National Bank of Georgia (NBG) in preserving a stable financial environment in our country. The NBG is much more than a financial institution. It has a big role in ensuring the national security. Amid complex geopolitical situation and cyber attacks that reflect our national currency, the NBG successfully managed to sustain national currency GEL’s strength and financial stability,” he said and thanked the NBG Acting President Natia Turnava for professionalism and prolific work.
The Speaker went on to say that years on, Georgia became a financial center in the region due to the banking-financing sector’s successful development.
“We are witnessing great progress in the implementation of modern banking technologies, customer service and development of the regulatory framework. As a result of the tireless work of our bankers, Georgia has become a dynamic and successful financial center in the region.
Today, given the challenges in the modern world, including the digital transformation of financial services, your flexibility and innovative approaches are paramount. I am confident that you will successfully continue to introduce innovations and ensure the stability and development of our economy and society in the future,” the Speaker said.
Georgian Parliament Speaker pledged the parliament’s support to the banking sector to ensure “accessibility of financial services for all citizens.”
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, legislative and executive authorities, NBG Acting President Natia Turnava and representatives of banking-financial circles attended the event.
Banker’s Day has been celebrated in Georgia since 2001.
