Speaker to enact Election Code amendments even if President rejects to sign
Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili will sign Election Code amendments on Monday, March 25, if President Salome Zourabichvili declines to do so, the Speaker announced.
The Speaker believes the amendments aim to hold the elections fairly and turn the Central Election Commission (CEC) into an effective body.
Shalva Papuashvili remarked nothing prevents the EU from opening negotiations for Georgia’s accession.
“I underscore once again that without those nine steps, Georgia is the leader in everything compared to Ukraine, Moldova and Bosnia-Herzegovina. Nothing prevents the EU from opening negotiations for Georgia’s accession. Negotiations had to open in December together with Ukraine and Moldova. Georgia was oppressed in December, and it continues so now. Georgian people know and see where Ukraine, Moldova or Bosnia-Herzegovina is concerning institutional development, corruption, and judiciary. People still observe an unfair attitude toward Georgia all the time,” he said.
Parliament overrode President Salome Zourabichvili’s veto on Election Code amendments on March 19.
