Speaker says President's impeachment to demonstrate Georgia's being a European country

President’s impeachment will not hamper Georgia’s European integration aspirations. On the contrary, it will demonstrate that Georgia is a European country and respects its Constitution, said Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili.

“We speak about the basic principles. Any modern state stands on its constitution. This is the main law which unites the society,” he said.

According to the Speaker, what matters is if the President violated the Constitution intentionally and how the government reacted.

“It is precisely being European, and not the other way around, that the violation of the constitution can have anything to do with the European aspiration,” Papuashvili stated.

The ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party will launch an impeachment procedure against President of Georgia Salome Zourabichvili.

The GD Chair Irakli Kobakhidze announced at the briefing on September 1 that the President of Georgia violated the Constitution by starting visits to foreign countries without the government’s consent.
