Speaker says killing of Georgian citizen in occupied Abkhazia shows “severity” of occupation
Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Sunday deemed the killing of a Georgian citizen in the Russian-occupied Gali district of Abkhazia another “deplorable fact” illustrating the “severity” of the occupation.
The Speaker remarked on media reports that Georgian citizen Teymur Karbaia was apprehended in occupied Gali for “unknown reasons”, after which he was physically abused and brutally beaten by local militia, resulting in his death on 9 December.
Papuashvili offered his condolences to the family of the deceased and asserted that this incident anew stressed the need to end the occupation “as soon as possible.”
The Speaker underscored the importance of understanding that the occupation was not only a violation of Georgia’s territorial integrity but also of human rights in the occupied regions, especially today as the world marks Human Rights Day.
