Speaker says impeachment vote to be decision of political responsibility

Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili believes that the only reaction that the parliament should have to the violation of the Constitution is to apply the Constitutional Court, which will give the President’s behaviour a legal assessment.

“The impeachment vote will be a moment of truth when everyone will have to make a decision with their own political responsibility,” said the Speaker.

The Speaker claims that the President’s impeachment will not hamper Georgia’s European integration aspirations. On the contrary, it will demonstrate that Georgia is a European country and respects its Constitution.

“We speak about the basic principles. Any modern state stands on its constitution. This is the main law which unites the society,” he said.

The ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party will launch an impeachment procedure against President of Georgia Salome Zourabichvili.

The GD Chair Irakli Kobakhidze announced at the briefing on September 1 that the President of Georgia violated the Constitution by starting visits to foreign countries without the government’s consent.
