Speaker highlights population support for Family Values bill, expects MPs to do the same
“Considering constitutional amendments on family values in detail is significant as well as hearing the population’s stances,” said Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili in Ambrolauri ahead of the meeting on Public Discussions on Constitutional amendments on Family Values and Protection of Minors.
The Speaker hoped that the lawmakers would act per the demand of the people.
“The public Commission keeps on meetings with the population. Today, we will meet the locals of Ambrolauri and continue meetings in other cities. Considering constitutional amendments on family values in detail is significant as well as hearing the stances of the population to deliver them to the lawmakers for them to make a decision. We see strong support from society. It is a message to the entire parliament, be it the majority or the opposition. I hope all MPs will act per the demand of the people,” he said.
The Speaker explained the plan to discuss all issues comprised in the draft bill with people.
“The draft bill includes issues such as marriage, adoption of children, learning programs. I should say that similar legislation is adopted in different countries. Last March, the US adopted 72 laws concerning the protection of LGBT propaganda in the education process. Other countries have this experience,” he said.
The ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party proposed constitutional amendments concerning family values and the protection of minors. Public discussions on Family Values and Minor Protection amendments kicked off on April 22.
