Speaker: Gov't expect to get EU candidate status on behalf of Georgians
“Georgian government applied for EU membership on behalf of the Georgian people, and the government will receive the candidate status on behalf of the Georgian people,” said Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili.
The Speaker denounced the opposition for their efforts to thwart Georgia’s EU candidate status.
“We have seen the last fight from the opposition lately. They observe their ship is sinking, the ship with which they have tried to impede the efforts to receive candidate status for the last year and a half. This ship is sinking and some try to escape and rescue themselves, while others continue to hamper and harm the process further,” he said.
According to the Speaker, Georgia’s European future is inked in the Constitution.
“An attempt to reject such approaches is a typical Russian style when by country they mean not the state and the government, but some groups it likes. It is the Russian policy that it is implementing concerning Ukraine and Georgia, where it selects the groups it wants, treats them as a country and ignores the government. Such an approach characterizes opposition,” said Shalva Papuashvili.
