Speaker: Former Ukrainian FM seeks legal justification to prevent his son from going to war

“Ukraine’s pressure on Georgia to send volunteers was a violation of international law. However, it appears that some only recall the law when it pertains to their own children, not others,” wrote Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on social media.

Papuashvili pointed out that in February 2022, immediately after the war began, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba requested that Georgia officially send volunteers to Ukraine—an action that would have placed Georgia in direct involvement in the war.

He noted that after Georgia’s refusal to comply, Kuleba recalled the Ukrainian ambassador from Tbilisi.

“Now, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine is seeking justification under Ukrainian law to prevent his 18-year-old son from going to war to defend Ukraine,” Papuashvili stated.

“The Ukrainian Secretary of the Security Council, Danilov, advocated for opening a second front in Georgia shortly after the conflict began. He argued that if Georgia concentrated on reclaiming its lost territories, it would significantly benefit Ukraine, as Russia would be too preoccupied to continue attacking Ukrainian cities and harming civilians.

However, the pressure that Ukraine applied on Georgia to provide volunteers is widely seen as a violation of international law. Interestingly, some individuals seem to recognize the importance of this law only when it concerns their own families.”
