Speaker advises EU member state parliamentarians to postpone Georgia visits
Foreign affairs committee chairs from some European countries expressed their interest in visiting Georgia, but I advised against it as the radical opposition might use it to incite radical actions,” said Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili.
Papuashvili explained that the timing was not suitable for their visit.
“Chairpersons from the foreign relations committees of several countries, mainly the Baltic states, Germany, Poland, and the Czech Republic, expressed their desire to visit and meet with me. I told them it wasn’t an appropriate time to visit.
Since the third reading of the bill will take place on May 13-14, Monday and Tuesday, it’s still not a good time for a substantive conversation; it would be better after the discussions. We are open to dialogue and value our cooperative relationship with other parliaments. However, given the possibility of violent protests in the past and emerging plans for further radical actions, their visit could be exploited by the radical opposition as a catalyst for further aggression.
Thus, I advised them to consider this As the radical opposition has violent plans and may use their presence to attack the parliament again. Unfortunately, they did not take my advice into account,” Papuashvili stated.
