Senator Shaheen emphasizes importance of free and fair elections in Georgia
U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen emphasized the importance of the U.S.-Georgia partnership in supporting Georgia’s democratic progress. At a press conference in Tbilisi, Senator Shaheen emphasized the United States’ desire for the forthcoming elections in Georgia to be free and fair.
“We are closely watching the upcoming elections, and we want to ensure they are free and fair. We discussed this issue with the Prime Minister. It is in our interest to have both international and local observers in place to ensure that the elections are conducted properly, allowing the citizens of Georgia to fully participate.
We also addressed the claims made by the Prime Minister and other government officials suggesting that the U.S. intended to stage a coup in Georgia—this is completely false. The U.S. has no interest in such actions, and, unfortunately, this narrative has created some tension in our relations. We are here to reaffirm our support for the people of Georgia,” stated Senator Shaheen.
