Samtavro Monastery complex restoration completed

The National Agency for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture and Sports of Georgia has completed conservation and reconstruction works on the facade of the Sveti Tskhoveli Church, the Samtavro St. Nino Church and Monastery complex, a world cultural heritage monument, and the installation of a water supply system.

The project methodology was evaluated by ICOMOS in May 2023, found to be exemplary and recommended for restoring other Georgian stone sites and monuments.

Minister of Culture and Sports of Georgia Tea Tsulukiani, Deputy Minister, Director of the National Agency for the Protection of Cultural Heritage Nikoloz Aznaurashvili, and other officials reviewed the completed works.

It is worth mentioning that commissioned by the National Agency for the Protection of Cultural Heritage, a conservation project was prepared and received a positive assessment from the International Council for Cultural Heritage (ICOMOS) before the start of the rehabilitation work in 2022. The agency allocated GEL 222,903 for research/design and rehabilitation work.

A cultural heritage monument of national importance, the Samtravto monastery complex is located in the centre of Mtskheta.
