Russia to haggle over human rights, Deputy FM says

“Russia uses human rights issues for haggling and, unfortunately, we have to conduct negotiations in such conditions,” Deputy Georgian Foreign Minister Lasha Darsalia echoed the upcoming 53rd round of Geneva International Discussion (GID).

According to the Deputy Minister, talks will focus on the six-point agreement implementation, illegal borderization, and dire humanitarian conditions across the occupied Georgian regions.

“The six-point agreement will be in focus. Russia has fulfilled none of these points yet. The humanitarian group meeting will address issues related to illegal borderization and unlawful detentions. Unfortunately, in the 21st century, Russia uses human rights issues for haggling, and we have to proceed in such conditions,” Deputy Minister said.

Lasha Darsalia noted that the Georgian government uses all mechanisms to release Georgian citizen Zaza Gakheladze, unlawfully imprisoned by the occupied Tskhinvali regime.

“All mechanisms and tools are involved. First of all, the activity of our partners. Georgia is not alone in resolving this issue. However, Russia is deliberately complicating the backdrop,” he added.

The 53rd round of the internationally-mediated Geneva International Discussions (GID), an international forum to address the consequences of the 2008 conflict in Georgia, will convene on June 30.
