Reference pricing for medications begins

Setting reference prices for medications officially starts today. The maximum higher limit for medicine costs must be determined by importers, distributors, and retailers as of February 15.

Health Minister Zurab Azarashvili said the regulatory violations will face different types of sanctions. He explained that the very move aims to provide citizens with the most affordable and high-quality medications.

According to the Health Ministry, at the first stage, reference prices will be set for medicines used to treat chronic conditions.

The breaches will be followed by a warning first, while repeated violations will result in GEL 5,000 penalty.

Selling the product at the price exceeding the wholesale reference price will cause a 22,500 GEL penalty, while repeated violations will lead to a GEL 45,000 penalty.
