Public Defender sums up 2019 with respect to human rights in Georgia

Georgia’s Public Defender Nino Lomjaria summed up the year of 2019 with respect to the situation of human rights in Georgia and talked about challenges in the sphere.

Lomjaria named staffing of Supreme Court with life-term judges as one of the main problems and claimed that the Supreme Council of Justice failed to persuade the observers in the competence of the selected judicial candidates.

The Ombudsman’s report mentions the right to freedom of expression and manifestation. According to Lomjaria, the facts of the excess of force especially during the June 20-21 developments were frequent.

The report also mentions facts of human rights violations during the protests against Tbilisi Pride march and the premiere of the film And Then We Danced. “The preventive measures were not carried out and effective reaction upon violence lacked on part of the government,” says the report.

Ombudsman also named restriction of free movement in the occupied regions, rights of minorities, labour safety and accessibility to healthcare as main problematic issues in the country.
