President comments about guilty verdict against Mikheil Saakashvili
Georgia’s President Giorgi Margvelashvili commented about guilty verdict made with respect to former president Mikheil Saakashvili.
“It is alarming that Prosecutor’s Office used Constitution’s article of pardoning for the bases of persecution,” President Margvelashvili said.
According to President, the statements made by Prosecutor’s Office have deepened suspicion that there is an attempt to misinterpret Constitutional right that creates problems to Constitutional balance.
Former President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili has been sentenced to 4 years in prison into murder case of 28-year-old Sandro Girgvliani, senior employee of a bank found killed in Okrokana settlement, outskirts of Tbilisi, on January 27, 2006.
Based on amnesty, the prison term was reduced to 3 years. Giorgi Arevadze, judge of Tbilisi City Court announced the decision. Court trial into the case continued during several years. Former president was charged for pardoning of those high-ranking officials, who were trialed into Girgvliani’s case.
