President calls on international community to focus on protecting cultural heritage in occupied territories
The Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili urged the international community to focus on protecting Georgia’s cultural heritage in its occupied territories.
President’s statement comes in response to a fire in the exhibition hall in occupied Sukhumi, destroying the Sukhumi National Gallery.
“The fire that destroyed Sokhumi’s National Gallery in occupied Abkhazia is a tragedy for us all. I deplore what is a direct consequence of the neglect of cultural identity both by the de facto leadership and the Russian occupants.
I call on the international community to revive its attention to the protection of our cultural heritage in the occupied territories,” the President wrote on Twitter.
According to media reports, more than 4,000 works were burnt in the main exhibition hall of Sukhumi due to the fire.
