President calls on GD to stop hate speech, instigation of confrontation
“I call on the Ministry of Internal Affairs to prevent all kinds of violent activities, this is its duty and this is the protection of law. And I call on the ruling team to stop hate speech and instigation of confrontation,” said President Salome Zourabichvili echoing the developments over Tbilisi Pride Festival.
According to President, the rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression guaranteed by the Constitution were violated.
President said although law enforcers promised to ensure the security of the planned event due to take place in a closed space, the organizers were not able to hold the festival.
“Imagine that all events, the form and content of which may appear unfavourable to any radical group, will likely be disrupted if law enforcers act the same way they acted today.
The reality is alarming that counter-action was instigated and openly supported through social networks not only by representatives of different branches of the ruling team but directly from the party by acting MPs,” she said.
President Zourabichvili claimed that the statements made shortly by officials or the Parliament Speaker on the protection of human rights had “no value.”
