Politicians remark on DOS 2022 report on Georgian investment climate

Georgian politicians remarked on the US Department of State’s (DOS) 2022 report that covers the investment climate in different countries, Georgia among them.

Mikheil Sarjveladze, chair of the parliamentary Human Rights Committee, referred to the positive report as a “cold shower” for opponents, saying the authorities have received ungrounded criticism, both domestically and abroad, when asserted that Georgia strictly respects the sanctions imposed against Russia.

“Actually, this statement of the US Department of State is a cold shower for critics. Getting to know the situation well, everyone will see that Georgia faithfully guards international events,” he said.

The opposition Strategy Aghmashenebli party also seems to be positive about the report. MP Paata Manjgaladze said the US Department of State once again reiterated that they have no “hostile objectives” towards Georgia and “this bad campaign should end.”

Moreover, Giorgi Vashadze, the party leader, emphasised the mention of Anaklia port in the report, saying, “Anaklia port is vitally important for our country in the new geopolitical reality, but the Georgian Dream obstructed it.”

For the moderate opposition, the report is “a significant message for investors.” The Citizens Party MP Levan Ioseliani welcomed the fact that Georgia maintains a positive business climate despite the war in Ukraine. He believes that more investments will follow by increased incomes and welfare for Georgian citizens.

According to the US Department of State report, the country has made sweeping economic reforms since 1991 that have produced a relatively well-functioning and stable market economy. “Business and investment conditions are sound, and Georgia favourably compares to the regional peers,” reads the document.
