PM: Until 2012, Justice Ministry was essential link in oppressive system
“Until 2012, the Ministry of Justice was an essential link in Georgia’s oppressive system,” according to Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, speaking during the opening of the House of Justice in Terjola.
“The Minister of Justice and the Ministry had complete authority over the judicial system. People were improperly held and punished, with acquittal rates of less than 0.1%.
More than 10,000 businesspeople had their property re-registered with the state, and the Ministry of Justice was at the core of it all,” the Prime Minister stated.
According to the PM, the penitentiary system was handled by the Ministry of Justice before 2012.
“The oppressive regime resulted in about 25,000 inmates, with an unusually high mortality rate of 140 inmates every year. Prisoners were frequently subjected to torture and harsh treatment. All of this was inspired by the then-Minister of Justice and the Ministry of Justice,” Kobakhidze noted.
