PM - I will not meddle in the investigation, but the case of Giorgi Shakarishvili is under control

It is very bad, extremely bad, when the media is not patient and spreads various versions, – Prime Minister of Georgia Giorgi Gakharia said when assessing the ongoing investigation into the death of 19-year-old footballer Giorgi Shakarishvili.

According to the head of the government, the main interest of the investigation is to identify the culprit.

“Let’s take care, first of all, of the moral situation of the family and the moral situation of our society.

What should we do?! We have to investigate the case and find the perpetrator. If anything is done wrong, it will also be a matter of investigation that will definitely be carried out and all the people who did not properly fulfill their duties will be punished. Trust me, I am personally interested in this. I, as the Prime Minister, will not meddle in the investigation, but, of course, the issue is under control,” Giorgi Gakharia said.

Shakarashvili went missing while at a friend’s birthday party in Mtskheta, a town outside of Tbilisi, early on June 19.  His dead body was found in the river Aragvi after a four-day search, on June 22.

Georgian General Prosecutor’s Office today published the conclusion of expertise conducted on corpse of Giorgi Shakarashvili, 19-year-old football player, based on which asphyxia by drowning in water caused Shakarashvili’s death. The expertise also concluded that the dead body had been inflicted multiple injuries before death by a flat object.
