PM – I was the first Minister of Internal Affairs who gave evidence in prosecutor’s office and will be the first Prime Minister to do so
I was the first Minister of Internal Affairs who gave evidence in the prosecutor’s office and will be the first Prime Minister who will do so – Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia told journalists.
Gakharia said that the Prosecutor’s Office would decide how many people had to be detained and whose responsibility would be raised regarding the June 20-21 developments in Tbilisi.
According to Gakharia, June 20 was “Gavrilov Night” but it was the night of the attack on the parliament. “Every police officer managed to protect the state institution that night and served the state and performed an official duty. There was certain excess of power and investigation continues,” Gakharia said.
Prime Minister said that those political forces which were calling on protesters for intrusion in the parliament building with force also had to claim the responsibility for their activities.
Protests in front of the parliament building at Rustaveli Avenue in Tbilisi have been held since June 20 in reaction to the visit of Sergey Gavrilov, a Russian lawmaker and his sitting in the parliamentary speaker’s chair during a religious assembly, which many Georgians saw as an unwelcome reminder of Russian military occupation of its breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
The protest of so-called Gavrilov Night was dispersed by the riot police with the use of tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannon. About 240 people both civilians and law-enforcers were injured during the night of June 20-21.
