PM – Georgian Ambassador to Ukraine will be recalled only for consultations to protect relations with Ukraine from adventurers
Georgia will recall its ambassador from Ukraine, but this does not mean that we will question our diplomatic relations or strategic partnership with Ukraine – Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia said.
According to PM, the ambassador will only be summoned for consultations on “how to protect relations with Ukraine from adventurers.”
“The point is, of course, that we Georgians and Ukrainians are not only strategic partners, but we have a long history of cooperation. Of course, we will not question this strategic partnership and the brotherhood between our countries and our peoples because of some irresponsible politicians. However, we will, of course, recall our ambassador from Ukraine, but this does not mean that we will question our diplomatic relations or strategic partnership with Ukraine. The ambassador will only be summoned for consultations on how to protect relations with Ukraine from adventurers”, the PM said.
Georgian Ambassador Plenipotentiary to Ukraine Teimuraz Sharashenidze will be recalled for consultations in Tbilisi – Davit Zalkaliani, Georgian Minister of Foreign Affairs said on May 8.
Zalkaliani said that Georgia did not consider either suspension of diplomatic relations with Ukraine or revision of strategic partnership with Ukraine. However, appointment of Mikheil Saakashvili, former president of Georgia wanted by Georgia, as Chairman of the Executive Committee of Reforms in Ukraine raised questions.
Zalkaliani said that with participation of Ambassador, it had to be determined what measures had to be taken so that the current situation did not negatively influence bilateral relations between Georgia and Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appointed former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili as Chairman of the Executive Committee of Reforms.
Reportedly, the appointment is confirmed in the President’s Order 169/2020 “Issues of the National Council for Reforms and the Executive Committee for Reforms”, which was signed by the President on May 7.
