Patrol Police Chief: Police maintain order on Melikishvili Avenue, urge demonstrators to comply with law

“Police units are stationed on Melikishvili Avenue to uphold public order,” stated Vazha Siradze, the head of the Patrol Police.

He reiterated the call for demonstrators to remain within the boundaries of the law.

“The protesters have been repeatedly informed that they must express their dissent lawfully,” Siradze emphasized.

He noted that certain individuals displayed aggressive behaviour and disregarded lawful police orders, resulting in administrative detentions.

“Drones were used during the protest to drop paint and bottles. These actions were documented by the police and, in some instances, warranted a response. The public, including journalists, observed some of these incidents.

We urge demonstrators to protest peacefully and in full compliance with the law. While their leaders are undoubtedly aware of this, they continue to engage in actions that provoke frustration among both the public and law enforcement.

We have removed the structures and items they had unlawfully placed on the roadway, yet they persist in obstructing the street. Our police units remain on-site to maintain public order, and we reiterate our appeal for them to act lawfully,” Siradze urged.

Currently, the protest is ongoing on Melikishvili Avenue. Earlier, participants gathered in the area surrounding Tbilisi State University (TSU).

In the early morning, the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) urged protesters and organizers at TSU to dismantle any makeshift structures within 15 minutes and relocate to a different site to express their dissent lawfully. The police subsequently cleared the road and removed several protesters from the location.
