Patrol Police Chief: Artificially blocking roads is illegal, protesters must follow restrictions

“Setting up barricades on the roadway and artificially blocking roads is a violation of law,” Vazha Siradze, Patrol Police Chief, told journalists at the protest site.

According to him, the police are exercising their legally granted authority.

“Artificially blocking roads is illegal. We called on them to clear the roadway and gave them a reasonable timeframe. People are on the roadway. The law applies throughout Georgia, and we are exercising our legally granted authority. We can read the law and see what rights they have and what they do not. While they have the right to protest, it is important to recognize that there are certain restrictions to follow. Depending on the number of people, it’s a matter of assessment of what actions law enforcement will take at any specific moment,” stated Vazha Siradze.

Earlier, law enforcement officers gave protesters and organizers on Chavchavadze Avenue a 15-minute deadline to clear the roadway.

Protest participants have begun moving from Chavchavadze Avenue towards Melikishvili Avenue.
