Part of opposition backs GD-prepared amendments on ombudsman election procedures

The part of the opposition on Wednesday supported the Georgian Dream-prepared amendments about the procedures for electing the country’s public defender.

According to the Parliament, the said amendments ensure high transparency of the process of selecting and presenting a candidate and the wide involvement of civil society, including academic and professional circles.

The candidates will be required to submit their applications to Parliament per the Speaker’s decree. This very decree also determines the creation of a nine-member special assessment working group.

Under the document, the working group members will judge the candidates based on integrity, a stellar reputation, objectivity and independence, appropriate professional knowledge (qualification, academic degree, scientific accomplishments, etc.), practical experience in the area of human rights and fundamental freedoms.

The total number of nominated candidates should not be less than seven.
