Parliament to initiate Election Code amendments before September 21
Georgian parliament will initiate amendments to the Election Code before September 21, charging the Legal Affairs Committee to draft the bill. The second working group meeting to revise the Election Code is underway in the supreme legislative body.
Part of the opposition, a representative of the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), the US Embassy to Georgia, and the Georgian President’s Parliamentary Secretary, are attending the meeting.
Non-governmental organizations working on electoral issues boycotted the meeting in solidarity with the International Society for Fair Elections and Democracy (ISFED), which was not admitted to the first working group meeting on August 18.
Ahead of the meeting, the Head of the Election Code Revision Group, MP Givi Mikanadze, said the amendments would comply with the recommendations of the OSCE/ODIHR and the Venice Commission. The changes will concern the selection of precinct election commission members and their certifying, expansion of electronic elections holding, financial transparency, etc.
