Parliament Speaker says opposition should represent MPs mandated by people
Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili said the opposition leaders have been failing so far to acknowledge that they represent MPs mandated by people instead of representatives of non-governmental organizations.
The Speaker stated that several points of the EC-proposed 12 recommendations are fulfilled, among them practicing the Strasburg Court decisions in the Georgian court system. Two issues are pending waiting for a resolution from the Venice Commission, namely, regarding the court reform and de-oligarchization law.
As for the election of the Public Defender and High Council of Justice, the decision depends on the constructiveness of the opposition. He blamed the NGO sector for “playing a destructive role.”
“The opposition disrespects the voters, while they follow the ultimatum of several influential NGOs,” he said, adding the parliament would attempt to reach a consensus in February.
